3 Career tips for the engineering/IT graduate.

Posted on 21:22 by Unknown
The job market for engineers has gotten somewhat saturated in recent years. While that does not mean that one will lack a job, it does mean that one may spend some months, or even a few years, out in the cold before they get a job. True, some graduates may get six figure pay in companies like Sony Erickson, Nokia, Airtel, Safaricom, KenGen, Geothermal Development Company- GDC, straight out of campus, but that is the exception, not the rule. A majority of engineering graduates will get somewhere between 30k and 50k as starting salaries. For those who get jobs in industrial area, the salaries may even be lower, at between 15k and 35k. So, how do you stand out?

Practical skills matter.
If you get a truly engineering job, then practical skills will matter far above anything. Perfect your skills in technical drawing and drafting, and hands on skills like wiring, welding, or using the lathe machine- for mechanical engineering graduates. The reason why some employers prefer diploma graduates is precisely because the degree holders sometimes look down upon such tasks. Even if you will be leading a team of
technicians, you will need to know a thing or two about basic practical skills and get your hands dirty, no matter how knowledgeable you are in other fields. Since computer is becoming a key part of everyday engineering operations, leading companies will also expect that your programming and IT skills are up to scratch, and that they can be smoothly blended with the traditional engineering skills.

If you want to go into consultancy, civil service/parastatal jobs are preferable.
Unless you are pursuing civil engineering, where you are likely to be utilizing your practical skills on the ground regardless of which company you work for, civil service and parastatal jobs are the way to go if you wish to go into consultancy in future. Civil service jobs, especially working on municipal and city council projects, will provide a wealth of experience that will make it easier to be registered as a professional engineer- where two or three years experience is usually needed.

However, the pay in government jobs may not be as high as in the private sector, so, you will have to choose between immediate rewards and less experience in private companies, or more skills but future rewards in the civil service. However, the lucky ones who get the best of both worlds are those who will get jobs in parastatals. KenGen, Geothermal Development Company- GDC, Kenya Power, and private companies of similar caliber. They will carry out work that is directly linked to their training, and will also get a high pay. For those in the electrical engineering field, leading telecommunications companies in the private sector just as well provide the much needed training, skills, and monetary rewards.

In the end, it will be upon you, which matters most at the beginning- money, skills, and experience, or a mixture of all three? You decide.

5 double degree combinations that could add value to your skills.

Posted on 21:27 by Unknown
Some universities- especially private universities- do offer double degrees at the undergraduate level. That means, you can graduate with two degrees from related areas. Even if your university doesn’t offer a double degree, it could just as well offer additional units in certain disciplines to augment what you are already studying. Here are the most common double degrees that could be of immense value.

1. Computer Science and Statistics/Math.
Computer Science and Statistics are subjects that complement each other. A data analyst, for example, needs skills of both a computer scientist and a statistician, to make valuable conclusions.

2. Hospitality and Foreign Languages.
In the hospitality industry, you’ll likely speak with guests that are fluent in a language other than English or
Kiswahili. If you work in high end hotels especially, then a double degree/ concentration in each of the above disciplines will add value to your skills in innumerable ways.

3. Engineering and Computer Science.
Much of the engineering problems are now solved by complex computer programs, further increasing the need for an engineer to be proficient in programming as well. In fact, some disciplines like electrical engineering and Computer Science are rapidly merging.

4. Economics, Finance and Accounting.
If you take a discipline in any of the above degrees, then it would also be appropriate to also take additional elective units in the other related disciplines. In fact, many graduates of economics, Finance, and Accounting work in similar industries, or in industries that overlap.

5. Sociology, Human Resource, and Administration.
If you are in any of the above disciplines, you will likely be dealing with people, either in the NGO industry, media, or in government. A degree in any of the above disciplines, plus additional elective units/ courses, in the other units would be a good addition.

Five best towns to work in Kenya and the region.

Posted on 21:22 by Unknown
Some professionals are happy to stay within their home towns, while others dream of their companies posting them to their dream cities. Some Kenyan companies, like Equity Bank, MKU, Co-Op bank, KCB and Nation Media have already established a presence in the East Africa region. If you are willing to rise in your career, and globe trot and travel the world, you could start with trips to the HR department to post you in these East Africa regional cities first.

1. Nairobi, Kenya.
Fair to say that it would hard for a company to post you outside Kenya, if it hasn’t posted you to Nairobi within its headquarters first. Since Nairobi is the capital of Kenya, it would be a good rehearsal for posting in the region.

2. Kigali, Rwanda.
Kigali, Rwanda has risen from the dark past of the genocide to one of the must be destinations for professionals and businessmen in the region. No work permits are required in Rwanda for East African
workers, and registering a business takes just a week or so. Rwanda’s president, Paul Kagame, is the poster child for prudent management, and you can bet that Kigali will continue to attract talented professionals.

3. Kampala, Uganda.
Since Kampala is the capital of Uganda, it follows naturally that the first posting for any expatriate will be Kampala. The environment is quite similar to Kenya, and an increasing number of Ugandans also speak Kiswahili, which means it will be easier to acclimatize into the environment. Let’s also not forget that their also many Kenyans in Uganda, which would obviously come in handy for your social life.

4. Arusha, Tanzania.
Arusha is the diplomatic capital of East Africa, hosting the East Africa Community, plus many regional organizations. It would therefore be a natural posting for any company or NGO. The culture and the language of Kiswahili is fairly the same as Kenya, which would make it easier to adapt to the environment.

5. Dar-es- Salaam.
How could I forget to include Tanzania’s commercial capital on the list? Of course not. Since Dar- es- Salaam is the largest city in Tanzania, then you can expect that if you are talented enough, and want to explore new opportunities in the region, the HR will yield to your request soon.
